Dear 5th Grade Families:

Welcome to Week 4 of our last quarter together.  This will be a short week, as Friday there is no school due to the Spring Holiday.  This extends through Monday, and school will resume on Tue, April 12th.  We hope you enjoy your 4 day weekend!!  Next week will also see the last of this year’s state testing, with Thursday the 21st and Friday the 22nd both scheduled for AASA state testing.  Here are the details:

  • AASA Reading/Math1 –Thursday, April 21st
  • AASA Reading/Math2 – Friday, April 22nd

Please reassure your students that we have been preparing them all  year long for these assessments.  In addition to covering all required standards, we have also worked with them on the sample tests provided by the state, so they are familiar with the format of the computerized tests.  If they would like to take the practice tests again, please check the link and instructions at the end of this post.  Please be in touch with any questions or concerns!

A reminder to please ensure your students are bringing a good-sized, refillable water bottle to school every day.  The weather is heating up, and hydration is becoming a more pressing necessity!!

Here is the curricular information for this week:

Math – This week in Math, we will continue reviewing 5th grade math concepts to get ready for the AASA tests coming up on April 21 and 22.

Science – In Science, we will continue learning about the importance of our Skeletal System.  We will be learning about our joints, connective tissue, and how all of the different parts of the skeletal system work together to fulfill their functions.

History – This week we are exploring how Britannia came to rule the waves, and discussing the causes of the English Civil War.  We have an R&R weekend coming up.  There will be a chapters 1-3 vocabulary quiz on WED next, April 20th.

English Language Arts –

Grammar

  • Titles of works are our grammar focus this week.  We will have lessons on Mon/Tue, with  practice homework on Tuesday, and a quiz on Thursday.

Literature

  • We are continuing to get to know the March girls this week as we continue reading LIttle Women.  Several students are still missing their own copy of the book, and we are short of classroom extras.  If at all possible, please provide your child with their own copy of the novel.  It can be found at this link.

GYV

  • We are continuing our new routine this week, with the schedule adjusted for a short week.  Students will work independently on their GYV lesson, and complete a study chart for homework on Monday.  This will be corrected in class, and used to study for Thursday’s GYV test.  Homework will include book exercises and spelling practice.  If your student does not  already have the book, here is an informational link for  Book C/6.  You may purchase your student’s copy anywhere books are sold.

Writing

  • We are taking a break from the writing curriculum this week as we focus on literature and grammar concepts.

Summer School Enrollment is Now Open!

The Summer Remediation Program is free for everyone. This program will help students move toward mastery of grade level skills and standards. Its objective is to remediate grade level reading, writing, and math skills. Please fill out the Summer School Registration Form if you are interested in the program for your child/ren. Once you register, we will add your child/ren to our list. We will be sending an email confirming they got a spot by the end of April.

Summer School will begin Tuesday, May 31st and will end on Thursday, June 23rd. It will be a total of four weeks, four days a week. We ask that your child/ren attend daily. We will not have an option for students to attend for select weeks, due to the nature of the course. Days will run from 8am to 12 noon Monday-Thursday and no homework will be assigned to preserve opportunities for summer play.

Please reach out to Glory Pabon at GPabon@archwaylincoln.org for any questions.

Performance Notices

Some of our parents will receive performance notices from their child’s teacher this week. Performance notices are sent home when a student is not making sufficient and consistent progress in one or more critical subject areas or when tardiness and attendance impact their ability to access the curriculum. Suppose you receive a performance notice for your child this week, sign and return it to your child’s teacher by Friday, April 23rd. Please email, call, or schedule a meeting with your child’s teacher for more information.
