Week of 3/21-3/25

Dear 5th Grade Families:

Welcome to Quarter 4!! By now, you should have received the email explaining access to your child’s grade report.  Please contact Mrs. Bluhm at SBluhm@archwaylincoln.org if you did not receive this communication.

Here is the curricular information for this week:

Math – This week in Math, we will continue learning about area and perimeter, specifically with composite figures, paths, and dimensions with fractions.  We will then move into finding the volume of rectangular prisms.

  • Here is the link to the Area and Perimeter unit on the Khan Academy website.  It includes several helpful videos, practice problems, and quizzes.  We have scaffolded this unit to include the 3rd and 4th grade prerequisite concepts, but this will be a great help to the students this year, as they may have missed some of the foundational concepts for this unit when schools shut down in March of 2020 as well as with the upheaval with in person and online school last year.
  • We will link the volume unit next week, because we are scaffolding those concepts as well.  We do not want them simply memorizing formulas, but rather we want them to possess a foundational understanding of what volume is, why it is measured in cubic units, and that it is additive.  Once we establish that foundation, we will introduce the formulas.
  • Our Area, Perimeter, and Volume test will be Friday, 4/1.

Science – In Science, we are starting our look into body systems. We are starting this with a unit looking at the skeletal system. We are learning the importance of bones and the main functions of the skeletal system this week.

History –  This week in history we are wrapping up our Reformation Unit.

English Language Arts –

Grammar

We are continuing our review of common homophones, and covering basic conventions daily in our Morning Work practice .
