Archway Lincoln Fifth Grade

Striving for Knowledge and Virtue

Week of 4/22-4/26

Dear 5th Grade Families:

State testing is behind us!  We are so happy to get back to regular business 😊.  This is week 6 of 10, so we are past the half-way mark for the quarter.  Progress reports went out today, so if you received one, please be sure to sign it and return it to your child’s teacher by this Friday, 4/26.  Please encourage your scholar to finish the year strong – we have lots more learning opportunities to offer our students!

Curricular information for Q4, Week 6

Maths – This week we will be starting and completing our short unit on number patterns and relationships.  Students will be identifying patterns and determining the equation or expression which can be used to solve for any value, including “X”.  Students will also be plotting their ordered pairs on a coordinate plane.  We will be taking our unit 12 assessment on Thursday.  This will complete our work in our blue and green workbooks, therefore students will be bringing them home.  For the remainder of the year we will be working on assignments (many are for enrichment) and projects.

Science – This week we are finishing our Modeling Earth’s Systems 2-paragraph writing assignment. This assignment is due no later than Wednesday, so make sure your scholar is using their time wisely during their science block! Later this week, we will be diving into our 6th unit: Genetics! This unit will be short, but there are some fun activities and projects planned ahead!

History – This week we are continuing the American Expansion before the Civil War unit, and we are diving into the doctrine of Manifest Destiny.  Students will receive a writing prompt Wednesday regarding the role improvements in transportation played in the settlement of the American West.  The paragraph is due next Monday, 4/29.   The reader for this unit has been updated on this blog.

  • Idioms/Proverbs: We have covered all the 5th grade idioms and proverbs, and will be reviewing them throughout the rest of the year!

Good evening 5th Grade Families:

Welcome back from our short Spring Holiday.  We hope you have had a relaxing and refreshing R&R weekend with your loved ones, and that your scholars are ready to take on the last 7 weeks of elementary school!

It is April, and testing season is upon us!  We have several days of it ahead, with the AASA Writing this week.  Please note the dates below and make sure students are on time and attending the entire testing session. We kindly ask that you do not plan appointments or unnecessary absences during the testing times to avoid having students miss class for make-up testing.  It is important that all students try their best on the state testing.  These activities help to measure their growth and proficiency levels as individual learners. Families can help by ensuring students get a good night of sleep, and eat a healthy breakfast.  They can also help their scholars walk through the practice tests linked below.  Here is the calendar for the rest of the 5th grade state testing.

Science – This week we are preparing for our Unit 5 Test! This week, students will play a jeopardy review game. Students revised their study guide last week, so they should be using that to guide their review.  I also strongly advise students to use the jeopardy game to review. Even though we will play it in class, it is a good gauge as to what types of questions they may see on the test. Here is a link to the jeopardy:

The 5th Grade Team

Week of 3/25-3/29, 2024

Dear 5th Grade Families:

We successfully completed our first State Testing task this year with the 5th Grade AZSci last Thursday.  Our next testing event is the 5th Grade AASA Writing Test, which is coming up next week.  The testing dates are shared below.

Testing begins first thing, so please be sure to have your students at school on time, and that they are well-rested and well fed 😊.  Here is the calendar for the rest of the 5th grade state testing.  We kindly ask that you please make appointments around these dates:

5th Grade:

      • Writing: Friday, April 5, 2024
      • Math/ELA-1: Thursday, April 18, 2024
      • Math/ELA-2: Friday, April 19, 2024

Student-led conferences are ongoing and a great success!  If you have yet to attend the conference, please remember that we are meeting families in or outside the Front Office (which may be closed during some of our conferences).  Please do not enter the school through the Archway Atrium (across from the field), since that entrance is reserved for Athenaeum pick-up.   We encourage ALL students and their families to take advantage of this opportunity to reflect on Elementary School triumphs and challenges, and discuss with their teachers and parents strategies for success in middle school and beyond.  If you have not signed up for this event, please contact your child’s teacher for a link to her sign-up.

A reminder that there is NO SCHOOL on Friday, March 29, AND Monday-April 1st.  School is closed for our Spring Holiday.  This is an R&R weekend!

Curricular information for Q4, Week 2

Maths – We will finish our last lesson from Unit 11 on Monday.  We will be reviewing for our cumulative assessment on Unit 10 (Properties and Classification of 2-D Shapes) and Unit 11 (Line Plots and the Coordinate Plane) Tuesday and Wednesday.  Our cumulative assessment on these 2 units will be on Thursday.  Encourage your students to go back through their workbooks (especially for unit 10) in order to review and study for the assessment.

Science – This week we are finishing up Unit 5! We are taking our last set of notes on biosphere interactions today and tomorrow. On Thursday, students will receive their Unit 5 study guide. This study guide looks a little different than what they are used to. As we near the end of this year and continue to get them ready for middle school, this study guide embodies what they may see in preparation of a middle school exam. It has less guidance, but enough for them to still be successful. The format of this study guide highlights the importance of building strong study habits now, rather than later. Due to the upcoming 4-day weekend, the scholars will not take their test until Monday (4/8) and Tuesday (4/9), but have them start studying as soon as possible! The less procrastination, the better!

History – This week we are wrapping up “England in the Golden Age” with a review session and our test on Thu, March 28.   The review game we are using in class is linked on our blog in the history section, as is the reader.

English Language Arts

  • Literature The Secret Garden is the last novel study of this 5th grade year.  We will be reading Chapter 4 this week, and we will also begin our Across Five Aprils read-aloud.  Please have your student bring these books to school if they haven’t already!
  • GYV – This week’s GYV is Chapter 6.  There is homework every day this week, with the usual test on Friday.    Links to study aids are on the GYV tab on our blog.
  • Idioms/Proverbs: We have covered all the 5th grade idioms and proverbs, and will be reviewing them throughout the rest of the year!
  • Grammar/Writing – This week in Writing, we are finishing working on an Informational Essay in preparation for the upcoming AASA writing test next week.  We will work on it in class all week, ending with a completed rough draft before the R&R weekend.  We will also be reviewing 5th grade grammar standards, starting with comma rules this week.
  • Poetry – “The Tyger”, by William Blake.  Students will be assigned 2 stanzas, which are due THIS Thursday, March 28th, 2024.

Save the date! Fine Arts Festival is Sat, April 13th!

The 5th Grade Team

Week of 3/18-3/22, 2024

Good afternoon 5th Grade Families:

We hope you have had a restful and relaxing Spring Break.  As we begin the final part of 5th grade, we are preparing for an eventful quarter.  Thank you to the families that have already participated in our Student Led Conferences, we are looking forward to meeting more of you this week.  If you have not signed up, please reach out to your child’s teacher to take advantage of this opportunity.  It has been a true pleasure to discuss school topics with the most important component of the mission – your scholar!!

We have lots of learning to engage us in the weeks ahead, and reviewing skills for the upcoming Arizona State Testing is also on our horizon.  The Big Event, of course, is 5th Grade Graduation – this year is really flying by…. here is information on what we are learning this week:

Curricular information for this week (Q 4, Week 1):

Maths – We started our unit on-line Plots and the Coordinate Plane! With line plots, students will be reintroduced to adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing fractions.  If your scholar has forgotten how to do any of that, make sure they ask for help sooner rather than later! Scholars will also be learning about the coordinate plane. Students will be able to plot points on a coordinate plane and use them to make line graphs! We will not have maths on Thursday due to AZSCI, so we will resume the chapter on Friday.

Science – This week we are pausing our 5th unit because of our AZSCI test! Today and tomorrow, we will be working through a sample test as a class, showing students the types of questions and tools that are available to them during the test. This is a good opportunity for scholars to see the formatting of questions and answers, in order to get a sense for what they will see on their test. The AZSCI test is this Thursday! On Friday, we will be doing a small lesson on more interactions between the spheres, focusing on how the atmosphere interacts with the other three.  We are getting closer to the end of Unit 5, so there will be a test in the next few weeks!

History – This week and next we will be wrapping up “England in the Golden Age unit.  The focus of these final chapters is the English Bill of Rights and the shift to  the modern Parliamentary System that grew from the English Civil War.  We will wrap up and review the unit, and plan on a Unit Test on Thu, March 28.   The reader is linked on this blog.

English Language Arts

  • Literature – This week we are wrapping up Voyage of the Dawn Treader, and beginning our new novel of study, The Secret Garden.  We will also begin our Read-Aloud text this coming Thursday, Across Five Aprils.   Please have your student bring these books to school if they haven’t already!
  • GYV – This week’s GYV is Chapter 5.  There is homework every day this week, with the usual test on Friday.    Links to study aids are on the GYV tab on our blog.
  • Idioms/Proverbs: We have covered all the 5th grade idioms and proverbs, and will be reviewing them throughout the rest of the year!
  • Grammar/Writing – This week in Writing, we are finishing up our current Opinion Essay. The Essay will be due on Wednesday, March 20th, and we are taking time during Computer Labs this week to type the Final Draft.
  • Poetry – “The Tyger”, by William Blake.  Students will be assigned 2 stanzas, which are due Thursday, March 28th, 2024.

The 5th Grade Team

Week of 2/26-3/1, 2024

Good afternoon 5th Grade Families:

A heartfelt thank you to all the wonderful volunteers that helped us make our annual Field Day such a great success.  It was a beautiful day, and our scholars got to spend time outside, enjoying comradery and friendly competition – it was wonderful!

We need your feedback!  Our school needs your opinion so that we can keep doing what we do well, and improve where needed.  Our goal is to 80% participation on our Family Survey, and we are far from that goal.  The importance of parent voices cannot be emphasized enough – won’t you please take a few minutes to let us know what you think?  Surveys are for good things too!  You can access the parent survey here.  Thank you!!

Spring Break…. It is just around the corner!!  We have 2 more weeks (including this one) until the end of the 3rd quarter – where did the time go?!  Please encourage your scholar to finish strong as we gather our data for upcoming semester grades.  Encourage them also to take responsibility for their learning, and reach out to their teacher with any questions or concerns about their progress.  Keep in mind that this is the year we are preparing them for middle school, where they will be expected to interact with more individual subject teachers, and manage several subjects’ materials and assignments.

This year, we are happy to announce the continuation of our fourth quarter student-led conferences for our 5th grade students!  We want to give your scholars time to meet with their homeroom teachers and their parents in order to reflect on their elementary school experiences and discuss strategies for success in middle school and beyond.  We have been supplying students with weekly reflection and self-assessing guides this quarter, and we will be using those to produce a discussion points form they will use to lead the conference.  The goal is to give students an opportunity to discuss their academic strengths, and to generate strategies to overcome any weak spots in their skills.  We will be offering these conferences after Spring Break, so please look out for the sign-up next week.  Should you have any questions, concerns, or feedback, please reach out to your child’s teacher.

Curricular information for the coming week (Q 3, Week 8):

Maths – We will be completing our last lesson for chapter 9 on Monday.  We will be completing a chapter review on Tuesday, and taking our unit assessment on Wednesday.  Our unit assessment will be a cumulative assessment.  Overall, students have been doing a fantastic job finding the volume of 3D shapes.  Remind your scholars that they must include the unit of measurement and “cube it” when giving their answers.  🙂

Science – This week we are continuing our 5th unit: Modelling Earth’s Systems. This week we will learn about the atmosphere and biosphere! On Thursday and Friday, after learning about the biosphere, the students will play a fun taxonomy game where students will have to guess the animal/plant using the domain, kingdom, phylum, etc. of the living organism to figure out what it is.  Students will also continue reviewing for AZSci – we will do so in the form of bell work questions at the start of every class.  Students were given a large packet for review, which should only be done at school and not at home. There will be a Unit 5 review quiz next Thursday on everything they have learned so far in this unit. Make sure your scholar is studying their notes and rereading the student reader if necessary! Also, a good tool would be to look back on previous homework assignments.

History – We are finishing out the quarter with the first part of a unit on England in its Golden Age.  This unit will help students better understand the roots of Revolutionary War politics, and the reasoning behind current government Separation of Church and State practices in America.  We will be learning about Elizabeth I’s efforts to reconcile English Catholics and Protestants, the growth of English naval power, the colonization efforts in North America, and the shift to the modern Parliamentary System that grew from the English Civil War.  We will begin the unit this week, and continue it into next week and beyond Spring Break.   The reader is linked on this blog.

English Language Arts

  • Literature – This week we are reading Chapters 9-11 of The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.
  • GYV – This week’s GYV is in the new book, Level 6, and we are covering Chapter 3.  There is homework every day this week, with the usual test on Friday.    Links to study aids are on the GYV tab on our blog.

Good Evening 5th Grade Families:

Field Day is this Friday!

Our 2024 Athletic Field Day is this Friday, February 23rd!! The day is almost here, and excitement is building!  Students are allowed to wear athletic clothing throughout the entire school day.  Please see the Family Handbook pg. 44-45 as Archway Lincoln has guidelines for the students to follow (i.e. modest attire, no pop-culture, etc.) We highly encourage hats and sunscreen.

Volunteers who have signed up already for Field Day will check in at the front office to receive their badge and wristband for the event.  Those who are not signed up to volunteer are welcome to spectate from the field only.

  • K-2 will participate in the morning (8am-11am)
  • 3-5 will participate in the afternoon (12pm-3pm)

Please contact Coach Bare (K-2) or Coach Lee (3-5) if you have any questions. We appreciate your support!

Good afternoon 5th Grade Families:

We are looking forward to celebrating the virtue of Friendship on Wednesday during our Great Hearts Day festivities.  A reminder that we do not allow the distribution of Valentines at our school, nor do we let students hand out treats on this day.  Instead, we will be having a classroom celebration with a meaningful treat, and taking time to discuss and celebrate the virtues of a good friend.

Performance Notices

Some of our parents will receive performance notices from their child’s teacher this week. We send performance notices home when a student is not making sufficient and consistent progress in one or more critical subject areas or when tardiness and attendance impact their ability to access the curriculum. If you receive a performance notice for your child on February 12th, sign and return it to your child’s teacher by February 16th.  Please, feel free to email, call or schedule a meeting with your child’s teacher for more information.

Jewelry: Girls may wear small, studded earrings. No loops or dangling earrings are permitted. Boys may not wear earrings. No other body piercings are permitted. Boys and girls are permitted to wear one watch. This may not be a smart watch. Bracelets, rings, and necklaces are not permitted unless for religious reasons.

Please refer to this link for further information.

Absences

A reminder that if your student is out of school for an excused absence, we can provide same-day materials to be placed at the front office (or with a sibling) by the end of the day if we receive a request by late morning.  Students have the same number of days they were absent to make up the work.  Please refer to the Family Handbook link provided above for further information.

Tutoring Information

If your student is invited to attend tutoring before school, please meet our 5th grade teachers at the playground gate rather than the Archway Lobby.  This entrance gives us faster access to our building, so that we can start our tutoring as quickly as possible after drop-off.
