Winter Break 2021

Dear 5th Grade Families:

We hope you are enjoying a relaxing break from the routine of schooldays.  Just a short post with a few reminders, as well as information regarding the Winter Project….

Winter Project update:

Over the Winter Break, students should be working on completing their Winter Projects.  Here is a reminder of what is due on the first day back to school on Wed, Jan 5th:

Winter Break – December 18 – January 5

  • Make a cover page for your essay’s final draft. The cover page must have:
    • A heading that includes the title, your name, and the date.
    • A picture of your historical figure.
  • Finish creating your visual aid
  • Prepare notecards for your presentation. Write just a few key words and phrases on each, not the entire speech.
  • Practice presentation. Must be at least three minutes long but less than five minutes.
  • Recommended: Refresh by practicing presentation January 3-4

The following items are due Wednesday, January 5

Turn in to Teacher:

– Five Paragraph Essay with Cover Sheet and Bibliography

– Typed final draft stapled on top-left

– No plastic covers or presentation binders

– Research Packet (It should be completely filled out.)

Have Prepared:

Presentation with notecards

Visual aid (take home after presentation)

Note: Visual aids may be stored at school until it is time for your presentation. Presentation order will be assigned at teacher’s discretion.

Essays should be typed in 12-16 size, using a clean and clear font, nothing too fancy!!

Please note: Students are REQUIRED to read their essay OUT LOUD a minimum of 3 times before turning it in!!!  Help us support good editing and revising habits in your students by holding them accountable to this caveat.

Below you will find links to the cover page and bibliography examples, as well as a link to the entire packet, just in case 😊.

The information for the bibliography should already be collected on the resources page of their packet (page 4).

Dear 5th Grade Families:

Welcome to the last week of the semester!  This week we are mirroring the Prep School’s final exam schedule.  We have two full days of school (Mon-Tue), our usual Wed early release, and a further 2 days of early release on Thursday and Friday.  A reminder that early release pick-up is 12:30, and that there are no clubs this coming Wednesday, December 15th.  School resumes on Wed, January 5th, with parent/teacher conferences for those families we did not meet with in October.  These are happening Mon, Jan 3rd and Tue,  Jan 4th.  Please continue to encourage your scholars to be mindful of behavior and academic expectations, and to finish strong!

Winter Project update:

This week students will be meeting with their teachers to receive detailed feedback regarding their 1st draft.  Due to unforeseen staff shortages, we are unable to accommodate a 2nd draft before the end of the quarter, so we will be asking students to write their final draft based on the feedback they are receiving this week.  This week we will also be providing students with information regarding the formatting expectations, including examples of the cover and bibliography pages.  The final draft is due after Winter Break, on Wednesday, January 5th,  Please check in with your student to make sure they are on track.  Contact  Mrs. Buske or Mrs. Wilson with any questions.

The 5th Grade Team

Week of 12/6-12/10 2021

Dear 5th Grade Families:

We have one more full week before the end of the quarter, with the last week before break consisting of 3 half-days.  Please encourage your scholars to persevere and finish strong, we have a few things to button up before the end of the semester!

Winter Project update:

This week students will be taking the rough drafts of their paragraphs home and collating them into the first draft of their essay.  We are dedicating most of the homework time for this week to revisions, to include  the 20 minutes usually allocated for reading.  The first draft of the entire essay is due this Thursday, December 9th, and it can be handwritten or typed, as preferred.  We will be meeting with them one on one to give feedback for their second draft, which we would like to have by next Wednesday, December 15th.  That version will be returned to them by Friday, so they can use it to write their final draft and to help them with their presentation.  The 5th grade ELA teachers will send an email home detailing this information, since it is a change from the packet timeline.  Please check in with your child and encourage them to work on their essays a little at a time, so that they do not get overwhelmed.  Reach out to Mrs. Buske or Mrs. Wilson with any questions.
