Month: January 2022

Week of 1/31-2/4, 2022

Dear 5th Grade Families:

We home you had a relaxing weekend.  Please mark your calendars for an early pickup on Friday.  We have faculty in-service on Friday, February 4th; as a result, we have a half-day. We encourage parents to pick up their scholars by 1:00 pm, so that teachers may leave early enough to get to their destinations for the in-service.  There will be no Friday clubs this week, but Atheneum will have normal operations.

Here is the curricular information for this week:

Math – In Math, we will continue working with decimals.  This week we will learn how to divide decimals by other decimals, how to use models and number lines to multiply and divide decimals, and how to convert units of measurement.

Science – In Science, we will continue learning about ecosystems and how living things relate to each other. We will learn about food chains and food webs, and the students will have the opportunity to analyze a field journal written by a scientist about an ecosystem they were studying.

History –  This week in history we will continue our study of the Renaissance period.

Some of our parents will receive performance notices from their child’s teacher this week. Performance notices are sent home when a student is not making sufficient and consistent progress in one or more critical subject areas or when tardiness and attendance impact their ability to access the curriculum. If you receive a performance notice for your child this week, sign and return it to your child’s teacher by Friday, February 11th. Please email, call, or schedule a meeting with your child’s teacher for more information.

Nurse’s Corner

We are seeing several students each week for stomach aches and headaches related to not eating breakfast before coming to school. When children skip breakfast, it is often over 15 hours before they eat lunch or a snack. Breakfast is a critical need for students before coming to school. If you have a busy household or scholar that isn’t hungry in the morning provide healthy on the go snacks like; hard boiled eggs, low sugar yogurt drinks, kid-friendly protein drinks, fruit pouches, or oatmeal. Eating breakfast helps a scholar’s attention span, concentration and memory as well as avoiding the uncomfortable physical pain that comes for skipping meals.

Week of 1/10-1/14, 2022

Dear 5th Grade Families:

It was a pleasure to meet with parents this past week, and affirm our partnership in our mission to grow the hearts and mind of our students. It was also great to have students back in the classroom again – we really DO miss them!  As we embark on the first full week of school of this semester, we are fielding many faculty absences.  We ask that you have patience with us in the coming weeks, as we rally together as a faculty to fill in for colleagues that are out sick.  Lunch, traffic, and recess duties are a priority, as they ensure students are supervised and cared for without fail, so please be mindful that administrative tasks may take longer to be seen to.  Thank you for in advance for your forbearance.  Here are some updates from our administration team:

Mrs. Kirkby, our Love and Logic consultant, is scheduled to do a short presentation on supporting the needs of our children and Raising Strong-willed Children.
