Dear 5th Grade Families:
We home you had a relaxing weekend. Please mark your calendars for an early pickup on Friday. We have faculty in-service on Friday, February 4th; as a result, we have a half-day. We encourage parents to pick up their scholars by 1:00 pm, so that teachers may leave early enough to get to their destinations for the in-service. There will be no Friday clubs this week, but Atheneum will have normal operations.
Here is the curricular information for this week:
Math – In Math, we will continue working with decimals. This week we will learn how to divide decimals by other decimals, how to use models and number lines to multiply and divide decimals, and how to convert units of measurement.
Science – In Science, we will continue learning about ecosystems and how living things relate to each other. We will learn about food chains and food webs, and the students will have the opportunity to analyze a field journal written by a scientist about an ecosystem they were studying.
History – This week in history we will continue our study of the Renaissance period.
English Language Arts –
Grammar
- Grammar this week will be practiced in daily Morning Work activities, and we will have a practice worksheet coming home on Tuesday for homework.
Literature
- We are enjoying our current novel, The Phantom Tollbooth. It is full of great wordplays and puns – excellent fun!! Please have your student bring in their own copy if at all possible. A link to purchase the book on Amazon can be found here.
- This week we will also be revising and practicing literary elements such as metaphors, similes, alliteration, and hyperboles.
GYV
- This week we will be reviewing GYV chapters 11-15. We will have spelling practice homework on Wednesday, and brief homework throughout the week. The chapters 11-15 cumulative test will be on Friday – please see the GYV tab on this blog for study materials.
Writing
- This week we will be sharing our revised essays with the class, as well as working on building good sentences.
Performance Notices
Some of our parents will receive performance notices from their child’s teacher this week. Performance notices are sent home when a student is not making sufficient and consistent progress in one or more critical subject areas or when tardiness and attendance impact their ability to access the curriculum. If you receive a performance notice for your child this week, sign and return it to your child’s teacher by Friday, February 11th. Please email, call, or schedule a meeting with your child’s teacher for more information.
