Dear 5th Grade Families:

We hope you have had a restful weekend.  This week we have another state testing day coming up on Thu, April 7th.  We will be taking the writing portion of the test, and students will be writing an essay based on the given prompt.  We will be working on strategies and skills all week, and reassuring them they are ready for this endeavor.  Please reinforce good study habits, plenty of rest, and a solid, nutritious breakfast that will take them through the morning. Here is the remainder of the testing calendar for this year:

  • AASA Writing – Thursday, April 7th
  • AASA Reading/Math1 –Thursday, April 21st
  • AASA Reading/Math2 – Friday, April 22nd

A reminder to please ensure your students are bringing a good-sized, refillable water bottle to school every day.  The weather is heating up, and hydration is becoming a more pressing necessity.  Classrooms are equipped with some emergency supplies, but they are running out fast as students rely on them too heavily.  Thank you!!

Here is the curricular information for this week:

Math – This week in Math, we will learn about various ways to collect, display, and analyze data.  We will also begin reviewing for the AASA tests coming up on April 21 and 22.

Science – In Science, we will continue learning about the importance of our Skeletal System.  We will be learning about the functions of the skeletal system, individual bones, and also our joints.

History –  We are continuing our study of the Elizabethan era this week.

English Language Arts –

Grammar

  • Focus this week is on comma use other than in a series.  We will have a lesson on Tue, with practice homework and quiz on Friday.

Literature

  • This week we are discussing characterization as a fictional convention, and relating the information to characters in our new novel, Little Women.  If your student does not have their book yet, it can be found at this link.

GYV

  • This week  students will work independently on their GYV lesson, and complete a study chart for homework on Monday.  This will be corrected in class, and used to study for Friday’s GYV test.  Homework will include book exercises and spelling practice.  If your student does not  already have the book, here is an informational link for  Book C/6.  You may purchase your student’s copy anywhere books are sold.

Writing

  • This week we are reviewing strategies and skills for the state testing coming up on Thursday.  Please encourage your student to do their best work, and take the time to read and edit their work before submitting it.

The Summer Remediation Program is free for everyone. This program will help students move toward mastery of grade level skills and standards. Its objective is to remediate grade level reading, writing, and math skills. Please fill out the Summer School Registration Form if you are interested in the program for your child/ren. Once you register, we will add your child/ren to our list. We will be sending an email confirming they got a spot by the end of April.

Summer School will begin Tuesday, May 31st and will end on Thursday, June 23rd. It will be a total of four weeks, four days a week. We ask that your child/ren attend daily. We will not have an option for students to attend for select weeks, due to the nature of the course. Days will run from 8am to 12 noon Monday-Thursday and no homework will be assigned to preserve opportunities for summer play.
