Dear 5th Grade Families:

State testing is behind us!  We are so happy to get back to regular business 😊.  This is week 6 of 10, so we are past the half-way mark for the quarter.  Progress reports went out today, so if you received one, please be sure to sign it and return it to your child’s teacher by this Friday, 4/26.  Please encourage your scholar to finish the year strong – we have lots more learning opportunities to offer our students!

Curricular information for Q4, Week 6

Maths – This week we will be starting and completing our short unit on number patterns and relationships.  Students will be identifying patterns and determining the equation or expression which can be used to solve for any value, including “X”.  Students will also be plotting their ordered pairs on a coordinate plane.  We will be taking our unit 12 assessment on Thursday.  This will complete our work in our blue and green workbooks, therefore students will be bringing them home.  For the remainder of the year we will be working on assignments (many are for enrichment) and projects.

Science – This week we are finishing our Modeling Earth’s Systems 2-paragraph writing assignment. This assignment is due no later than Wednesday, so make sure your scholar is using their time wisely during their science block! Later this week, we will be diving into our 6th unit: Genetics! This unit will be short, but there are some fun activities and projects planned ahead!

History – This week we are continuing the American Expansion before the Civil War unit, and we are diving into the doctrine of Manifest Destiny.  Students will receive a writing prompt Wednesday regarding the role improvements in transportation played in the settlement of the American West.  The paragraph is due next Monday, 4/29.   The reader for this unit has been updated on this blog.

English Language Arts

  • Literature The Secret Garden is the last novel study of this 5th grade year.  We will be reading Chapters 12-15 this week, as we meet new characters and witness Mary’s continuing transformation.
  • GYV – This week we are working on Chapter 8 or our GYV this week.  As usual, we will have nightly homework, which will be due Friday.  We will have the usual spelling test on Friday, also.  As always, links to study aids are on the GYV tab on our blog.
  • Idioms/Proverbs: We have covered all the 5th grade idioms and proverbs, and will be reviewing them throughout the rest of the year!
  • Grammar/Writing – This week in Writing we are moving on to Narrative Creative Writing. Students will learn about the basic story elements needed in any story. In Grammar, we are continuing to review the 5th Grade grammar standards.
  • Poetry – “The Road Not Taken”, by Robert Frost.  Students will be assigned 2 stanzas, which are due Friday, May 3rd, 2024.
