Good afternoon 5th Grade Families:

We have a very busy month ahead, with Great Hearts Day and Athletic Field Day both coming up soon.  We will begin with this week’s curricular information:

Curricular information for the coming week (Q 3, Week 5):

Maths – Students will complete a unit review on Monday, and Tuesday.  Originally the test was scheduled for Tuesday, but it was moved to Wednesday to allow for an extra day of review.  They will take their chapter 7 assessment on Wednesday, 2-7-24.  The links to the 5th grade Khan Academy units below will be of great help to your scholars if they are struggling with these concepts or if they need/want extra practice. 🙂

Science – This week we are finishing up our unit on Energy and Matter in Ecosystems. We will be working on our study guide and going over it today and tomorrow. Students will take the test on either Thursday 2/8 or Friday 2/9. Make sure your scholars are studying from their notes and study guide!

History – This week we are continuing our history unit on the Reformation, with a focus on the birth and spread of Protestantism.   The reader is linked on this blog.

English Language Arts –

  • Literature – This week we are reading Chapter 5 of The Voyage of the Dawn Treader.   We are assigning two homeworks a week to go along with the novel – a vocabulary and a comprehension assignment.  Typically, it will be a Tue/Thu arrangement, depending on the school schedule.
  • GYV – This week’s GYV is Chapter 20.  There is homework every day this week, with the usual test on Friday.    Links to study aids are on the GYV tab on our blog.  We have one more chapter in the current workbook, before we move on to Level 6 next week.  Please ensure your scholar has their copy ready to go in their locker no later than Friday, February 9th.
  • Idioms/Proverbs: “A watched pot never boils”, and “Well begun is half done”.
  • Grammar/Writing – This week in Writing our Opinion Essays on Space Tourism are due Wednesday, February 7th. For Grammar this week, we are learning about independent and dependent clauses, and how to create complex sentences.
  • Poetry – “Casey at the Bat”.  Students will be assigned 3 stanzas, which will be due Friday, February 23rd, 2024.

 Class Group Picture Day is Coming!

Picture Day is Tuesday, February 13th!  Place your order for a class group image today at mydorian.com. Search for your school’s name, click the green “Order” button next to the Class Group Picture Day event, and place your order!

Field Day Coming Soon!

Our 2024 Athletic Field Day is on Friday, February 23rd. Students will participate in active and healthy competitions with their peers, striving to do their best! Over the next few weeks, students will begin preparing for these events and learning about the Ancient Greek games and the significant history of the Olympics.

Please sign up HERE to volunteer! We need several volunteers, most of whom will help run the athletic events. Volunteers MUST be Raptor cleared and have completed the required PSO training to help.

  • K-2 will participate in the morning (8am-11am)
  • 3-5 will participate in the afternoon (12pm-3pm).

Those who are not signed up to volunteer are welcome to spectate from the field only.

Uniform Reminders:

A gentle reminder that our uniform code, per the family handbook, does not permit jewelry at school.  We are seeing a lot of necklaces being worn to school, please see below for an excerpt of the handbook referencing jewelry:

Jewelry: Girls may wear small, studded earrings. No loops or dangling earrings are permitted. Boys may not wear earrings. No other body piercings are permitted. Boys and girls are permitted to wear one watch. This may not be a smart watch. Bracelets, rings, and necklaces are not permitted unless for religious reasons.

Absences

A reminder that if your student is out of school for an excused absence, we can provide same-day materials to be placed at the front office (or with a sibling) by the end of the day if we receive a request by late morning.  Students have the same number of days they were absent to make up the work.  Please refer to the Family Handbook link provided above for further information.

Tutoring Information

If your student is invited to attend tutoring before school, please meet our 5th grade teachers at the playground gate rather than the Archway Lobby.  This entrance gives us faster access to our building, so that we can start our tutoring as quickly as possible after drop-off.

This Saturday is Daddy Daughter Dance!

The dance is on Saturday, February 10th from 6-8:30pm. This years theme is “A Night Under the Stars”. Join us in the Lincoln Gym for an amazing Daddy/Daughter Dance with a DJ, treats, drinks, photos and crafts. Each father and daughter must have a ticket to enter.  Only a handful of corsages left. Once they are gone we will not be able to get more.  Corsages must be picked up on Friday during pickup between 2:45-3:45 outside of the MPR.

Dads Needed for Drive Line on February 14th 

Calling all Dads!  Dad’s Club will be helping with drive line drop off on Great Hearts Day, Wednesday, February 14th.  To serve our teachers and give them a morning break from drive line duties, please volunteer from 7:35 am-8:05 am on 2/14!  Please contact j.messamore@gmail.com if you’d like to volunteer or have questions.
